Mr. Krause,
Please do not think that your issue falls on the deaf ears of this site's readership. I have and I expect hundreds to thousands have read the beginnings of your plight. I respect that you explain the situation rationally and made an effort to conduct yourself before the board with the same respect you deserve. I expect I am not alone in this thinking.
One of the problems is that few of us know (as individuals) exactly what to do; in your case and with their own concerns. Of course, one of the best defenses is preserving the facts in a way that meets evidentiary standards for your state and remaining involved once you secure an attorney. Of course that is the most important and difficult part, and will require significant effort.
Apart from that obvious suggestion, I expect there are many that may wish to better understand your situation as it does become a learning experience for us all.
I wish I had more...

Sounds like the CAI is at it again. (sigh)
Perhaps, one of these days, enough HOA homeowners will become knowledgeable enough about HOAs to be make sure they don't allow their HOA boards of directors to retain lawyers who are members of the CAI (Community Associations Insitutute).
