Summary: Following are reports from Desert Crest homeowners:
John Ford moved into Desert Crest HOA in Desert Hot Springs, California, a trailer park in the middle of the desert where the owners paid $35 per year to their HOA . The HOA owned nothing in common and provided no amenities.
The developer , Erickson owned a private 9 hole golf club and bingo club business (OSCA Development Company ) open to the general public. Some of the owners paid to use it..
Erickson advertised $10 trailer lots for sale and seniors from Canada and other States flocked to the desert to retire in trailer and mobile homes on their own lots.
Erickson financed John Ford to recall the board of Desert Crest HOA . Ford, and then used lawyers, Peters & Freedman, to change the association into a Davis Stirling HOA without the required vote of 100% of the owners.
Ford and Peters and Freedman asked some of the owners to vote to require all owners to pay $948 per year to Erickson's club. Erickson then could collect $564,000 a year tnder threat of the Davis Stirling homeowner association foreclosure laws.
Both Ford and Peters & Freedman then went to work for Erickson ($70,000 a year to Ford and his wife and tens of thousands in legal fees) to sue the owners and collect the dues. The lawyer got tens of thousands in lawyers fees. Many of the seniors are in their 70s, 80's and 90's, and are too old and cannot affford the dues. Many have lost their lots and homes to the lawyers and club owner.

Other Information: OSCA development changed it name to Desert Crest Country Club, Inc. Erickson has since sold the club to a new owner.
