Proposed bill will up residents' say

Legislation would force associations to notify their homeowners of possible rule changes and let them appeal.

6. Lawyers double as legislators and write laws to benefit themselves
Trust me when I say that legislative bills spewed forth by California politicians purporting to protect homeowners living in homeowners associations may, in due course, benefit only the Trial Lawyers coffers.

Lawyers who double as legislators write laws that legislate and micromanage you and I but benefit mostly the lawyers.

5. Response to Comment # 4 - "Is this quote accurate?"
  Ben:

I have had many conversations with Susan Gill Varden, the reporter and so obviously do not recall the precise context in which this statement was made.

AHRC has received many complaints from homeowners in Orange County homeowner associations - which are by far the biggest percentage of any county in the state - approximately 1/3. In our investigations, we have uncovered time and time again abuses as described in the Register article.

Those are facts which any amount of wishful thinking cannot make go away.

Does that mean that every board member is that way? No. We come across good ones. But the number of bad instances that we encounter is sufficiently high to justify serious concern. Assemblywoman Bates' bill grows out of that concern.

Best wishes

4. Is the quote attributed to you accurate?
  Quote:

"It's all invested in the board," said McMahon, a bill supporter. "And the board members, basically, once they get in there, have little experience running corporations. And they're happy with the power and privileges they get. The next thing you know, they're not concerned about what the homeowners say," McMahon said.

I'm Treasurer of a homeowners association in Orange County. But, I'm writing as a private citizen.

Before I comment, I'm interested to determine whether the quote attributed to you in the subject article is accurate and in context.

3. Board members called AHRC
Two homeowner association board members called AHRC on this article.

One said he'd like to have an AHRC speaker go to his association and motivate members to serve on the board as no one wants to serve. He refused to give his name or the name of his association. He said he was going to resign as it is a "thankless job".

Another called and said he will send email via Susan Gill Varden as the email he sent to AHRC was returned - he was using the AHRC URL instead of an email address..

The best article I have seen on a pending bill. We need more of these to keep us informed.

Well done.
