What great ideas !!!!
Could you possibly post a copy of one (or more) of your flyers and business cards so's we all could do the same thing you did in various areas of our own states?

And, unfortunately, the Business Managers believe them. It appears that some, if not all, HOA "Business Managers" are part of the homeowner's problem, not part of the solution. That is, the "Business Managers" appear to be part of the "HOA Industry cabal" that are improperly 'milking' homeowners for every penny they can get. And they appear to be doing that in collusion with the CAI and state legislators. :-(

As you probably already know, to make a serious "impression" (financially) on CAI lawyers-lobbyists, homeowners not only must publicly expose the CAI's destructive-to-homeowners "business judgment" behavior, but we must also file a complaint in court against the HOAs that the CAI lawyers represent ... AND WIN !!
So far, we homeowners have been beaten about the head and shoulders in court. That is, we lose ... regularly.
We do, however, seem to making good progress against the CAI lawyers-lobbyists **politically** by publicly relating FACTS and LAW about them which might translate into serious financial difficulties for them down the road in the near future.
So, if by "knocking on their door" you mean publicly exposing their ethical and legal wrongdoings, I'm with you 100%. But I just don't know how many homeowners can afford the court battles that CAI HOA lawyers seem to "make up" as they go along. (sigh)

One of the means of communication that we used during our HOA battle was FLYERS. I mean, we papered the community to death! We even launched our flyer attack in the city, at the malls, the movie theatres, concert halls, sports stadiums, any public restroom & taped to the backs of the doors, left them in stacks at the local library, the post office - literally anywhere we could find where we could set down a few flyers and they wouldn't blow away.
People are curious by nature and will pick them up.
We printed information about HOA's in general and the financial risks associated with them. We put several links to homeowner advocate websites, and launched our flyer wars. It doesn't always matter WHICH HOA you are bashing, just bashing HOA's in general gets the point across quite well!
We also made Homeowner Advocate business cards with the logo design of the letters in bold large print - HOA and a circle with a line through it. Business cards are cheap. We didn't even put a name on it. Just put a clever one liner on the card like "HOA NO WAY", added a couple homeowner advocate websites, and left them everywhere.

I checked and in California the Attorny General is the one who oversees the laws for HOA's. I looked on the website and there are many things that he has no statutory authority over and -Disputes between members and the governing body involving the capacity, competence, propriety, or wisdom of Governing Board decisions - is one of them. He recommends getting a lawyer for this type of problem. So basically, BOD's can run on self will and pretend that what they are doing is for the good of everyone in the community. And, unfortunately, the Business Managers believe them.

Veronica, I have also been threatened by the management company's attorney to 'cease and desist libel and business disparagement'. I too, keep excellent records and can back up everything I have written.
Our management company - Principal Management is owned by Senator John Carona, who has helped to write the current property codes that tend to benefit the HOA and are detrimental to the homeowners.

I recently received a notice from my HOA advising me that if I continued to publish my newsletter I would be fined $100 under the nuisance clause of the CCD. I also received a letter from their attorney.
Unfortunately, for the HOA and attorney I keep excellent records and can show documentation for everything I print. What I really want to know is where is the ACLU?
This is happening all across the country, millions of people are now having their civil rights violated and they fall silent. We all need to be knocking on their door, very very loudly.

One of our most recent discoveries was that a of 51% of the POA Membership voting to disband this Property Owners Association and it's done.
Between the recession and the out of control communist leaders pretending to be a BOD (claiming "We Have the Communities Best Interest at Heart") some of us are considering a push to get rid of the POA all together and turn it over to the county, possibly to become a new city.
If we have to tolerate this sort of behavior why participate. They are increasing our assessments so much so that the thought is not only being entertained it's an easy sell.
Listen up Lake California were referring to your Board of Directors!

It is too bad that it has gotten to this. It seems that BOD's can do anything they want anymore without any regards to the laws. That is very childish about the slander - right - sticks & stones may break my bones.
The BOD's at my HOA are running amok with a Business Manager that lets them do whatever they want, because he is so inexperienced that he doesn't even know that there are laws they have to follow, so he listens to the BOD's who are running on self-will, and does whatever they say.
I have tried to protest at open meetings, stating that the BOD's have laws they have to follow and the last time I did that our Business Manager said they would discuss it in Executive Session - so basically he was saying that I wouldn't have a voice and whatever the board said was final.
I have decided to give up because I know I don't stand a chance.

poor little HOA board members got their feelings hurt huh? you can't even say BOO! to someone anymore without getting sued. too many sissies these days, eh? well i say people need to suck it up! when people voluntarily run for a political office do they really think that everybody will be dancing in a big circle holding hands and singing koombaya behind the gates?
and what about that old kindergarten rhyme:
sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me?
COWBOY UP!!
