Excellent article; however, the problems, risk, liabilities and abuse mentioned within, are not restricted to Senior or California.
I'm in my 40's, live in Lawrenceville, Georgia and find myself quite victimized. I purchased a new town house 3 years ago and the association fee was $66/mth.
Prior to the purchase, I asked the sales representative if she foresaw a potential increase....silly me! She obviously said no. She wanted the sale and said that it had only increase $3 from the previous year. I fell for the gimmick and 3 months after moving in, the dues increased to $95/mth. (That's $33, not $3) The following year, the dues increased and this time to $110.00/mth. Get the pattern?
The residents of this community will welcome the New Year by writing a check to the HOA, for the new fee of $193/mth. This is an atrocity, calamity, crime and outrage.
What governmental agency is tracking this problem? Someone discovered a quick and quasi- manner of robbing people in a quasi- legitimate manner. They got together with attorney, vendors and power hungry residents, a.k.a. Board members, and are stealing our monies in the name of a "Home Owners Association".
I too received the cold/callous response: You don't like it, you move. The Homeowners Association is suing the builder for 'supposed construction problems' and yes, I have been denied the right to see financial statements, unless I pay. Again, where are my rights?
I'm no longer crying but I'm rather desperate to move. My home is on the market, and my son and I will have to live with family until my funds are rebuilt and I can once again buy in a NON-HOA community. This entire situation is sad, very sad.
This is America but I somehow feel as if I live in a very 3rd world or communist country – without rights.
