I was pleased that Barbara Walters/ABC aired the segment, I posted and read all the posts on this subject on 20/20
message boards.
It's my hope other stations; mainly, 60 Minutes, Mike Wallace may air a segment on this subject.
I refuse to watch Dan Rather on Channel 2, when I learned he refused to do anything about HOA's.
This seems to be an excellent time for the media to expose more about CAI and HOA's. Look at the Enron,
Andersen accounting firm, and other corporations who have been exposed, why stop there?
With the governor race on in California, isn't it strange no mudslinging has hit the air waves regarding the
Civil Codes being re-written (in part)?
In our Association, our board hasn't had an audit in five (5) years. By the way, our board has hired their
attorneys, who are members of CAI, our management company are CAI members and the board are members
of CAI. Our board has become ruthless!

I commend ABC News and Barbara Walters for airing the segment on CAI. I posted and read many, if not all,
the comments on Barbara Walters message boards on this subject. I know many members of associations in various
states as well as here in CA, who were pleased with 20/20. It's my hope 60 Minutes, Mike Wallace will do a segment
on the same subject. I refuse to watch Dan Rather or Channel 2, when I learned he turned down the request to air
a segment on HOA's.
With all the media concentrating on Enron and the Andersen Accounting firm and others who cook their books, I wonder
why they are avoiding the Homeowner Associations atrosities. This would be a very good time to address these issues.
In California, I notice with the campaign for governor, there is no mud slinging about homeowner associations. Isn't that strange?
Seems to me the news media are allowing CAI to become more powerful by not addressing issues, now that the cat is out of the bag!

Having read a great deal of information about this CAI group - are they for real? How can such an organization exist in this country? How is it that our so called "elected" officials are a party to this "institute". It seems as if they have effectively "institutionalized" the American Home.
Who would want to be a part of this org? Does it serve any useful purpose whatsoever? Do the people who are paying 'dues' to this org have any idea what their money is being used for? Do they truly understand the serious ramifications of being a part of such an industry that appears to be in the business of destroying the American Dream of Home Ownership?
Tsk Tsk, what is this country coming to?
So they try to strong arm ABC News??? Let them try. ABC News is no dummy. They can see right through that.
Good Job ABC. Now, let's see a thorough one hour SPECIAL on the issues that lurk beneath the surface of this inherently and sometimes fatally flawed housing concept!
Sincerely,
Pink

Advocate's rebuttal to CAI letter criticizing ABC. The numbered items, "Fact #", refer to issues raised by CAI in its letter to ABC 20/20.
Fact # 1: People choose to live in community associations.
As long as there are deceptive practices concerning the sale of HOAs, this statement cannot be made. The real aspect of living in an HOA in regard to the surrender of a homeowner's rights and the limited resources available to solve problems -- no government oversight -- are not told to buyers, nor the fact that the HOA purchase is considered a private contract with the HOA.
Fact #2: Homeowners determine how their community associations are run.
CAI uses this study as a marketing tool to promote and sell planned communities (according to the book by Stabile, see below), while ignoring any discussion of those rogue HOA boards. These rogue boards are more than just isolated HOAs, and the extent of the abuse made permissible by the unregulation of HOAs by state governments is dismissed without a bat of an eye. Not only ignoring this state of affairs, CAI aalso operates to discourage any remedial legislation by homeowner rights advocates.
Fact #3: Community associations successfully serve some 50 million Americans.
CAI preaches, but has no enforcement capabilities, even with its own members. With only 4% of all homeowners associations, by its own statistics, this is a bit of overkill.

We are in receipt of the following news release. The fact that some trade association has control over the way Americans live in their homes is scary.........

According to our HOADATA.org there have been over 9988 foreclosure filings in the last
In 2001 alone we have listed 1449 foreclosure filings. Although we have attorney Michael Gainer listed with 928 foreclosure filings, he stated to a Chronicle reporter that he has around 1400 or 1500. We have no record of the non-judicial or those in condos, which are too too many from the e-mail we have been receiving.
We also don't have those in surrounding counties.
The number is staggering. The number we have from 1985 through 2001 is 15,767
