Have you written your story or done a press release? If not take the time to do one.
Then use the submission forms:
• News to publish your story or press release on the web
• Directory Listing - to publish information about your homeowners association, board members, lawyer and manager
• Lawsuit Submission - to publish you lawsut if there is one
You can also publish pictures and files.
Then email, fax and call the media. If they have an interest and time, they may consider your story.
Media can only publish so much - and if publishing your story is important , consider self publishing. Many homeowners have set up their own websites to do this.

Do you know anyone who can help us get our HOA story published? I believe the best way to stop abusive associations is to tell the story publically... Expose them for their deceit, their harassment, and their misuse of HOA funds in filing nuscance lawsuits that cost all the owners.
The courts won't even address these issues when it's obvious, so it's a waste of everyone's money.

I love living in this great country of ours but there is a major issue that keeps getting ignored while the media seems to think that "American Idol" is so important.
It makes me sick how the media stations are covering the certain T.V. shows like they are the most important things going on. Thousands of people through out this country of ours are fighting to keep their homes just because they may have trimmed a bush on their property or they may have fallen behind less than a hundred bucks on their association dues. People who have bought homes in Homeowners
Associations are being ignored while reporters are doing the tough job following who is going to be the next "American Idol Star" I hardly feel that investigated reporting is finding out what town the next pop star is from.
If the homeowners in this country got the same attention as the "idol" star than thousands of people may still have their dream home. Real stories are about people being abused by these association board members and the bottom feeder lawyers who represent them.
The courts are not protecting the people who need it and the media is not doing what they should be doing.
What is more important?
1) Someone who is about to lose his or her home? or
2) Who will be he next "American Idol"?
If you choose number 2, you must be the type of reporter who believes that this is important news.
I commend the reporters in this country who are starting to uncover and bring this issue to light and hope that many more will start doing the same and uncover the deceptiveness that comes with buying a home in a homeowners association.

Comment 6. Stop the association people.
Get involved? Get a clue!!! We tried. But we were stonewalled! The elections were a fraud, the board was a bunch of busybody crooks and the management company was incompetent. It didn't matter WHAT our stupid controlling documents said - they were not even properly updated with the latest revisions. The set we received when we bought the house was incomplete!!
Also, we didn't get a copy of the civil, corporate or business codes that applied to HOA's.
Martha - If I were you the book I would read would be
- Villa Appalling! Destroying the Myth of Affordable Community Living. . You can find it on amazon.com
That Condom. Blue Book was worthless in our opinion.
Be very careful. Get informed. Get in touch with the Texas Homeowner Advocacy Group. Maybe they can be a source of suppoort.
It is very sad to hear stories like yours. Just when you think you are feeling so proud to own your first home sweet home, the HOA sharks come out to bite. And they are relentless.
Stories like yours are why homeowner advocates VOLUNTEER diligently with no pay to spread the word of the risks and liabilities associated with such housing.
Good luck to you. Keep us informed.
And to that bloke who said boards don't get paid - hahahahahahhaha!!!!!!!!! Where have you been all these years? Your comment in that regard was elementary at best!

Re: Comment 6: Stop the association people
Talk to your association, tell them what you want to see done and explain the garage door. Become involved or be ruled by those who do.

In response to GET INVOLVED.
We PAY our dues and only want to BE LEFT ALONE.
Our HOA governmental body consists of unqualified people who don't realize their limitations. Nice enough otherwise. Why on earth would anyone want to "get involved" with that.
So...Don't change the rules with anything less than 2/3rds of our vote, and don't overstep your limited authority and we won't have a problem. Just because you don't hear from us doesn't mean we are not aware of every thing you do.
As for being just volunteers, that is nonsense. Go volunteer in a hospital or something if you want any kudos.

If you live in a place where there are association dues, you have to pay them.
The board and people around you do not care if you pay your mortgage on time or not, the same way that the mortgage company does not care if you pay your association dues or not.
The payment of the association dues are for expenses of the place where you live, like maintenance, insurance, water etc. whatever the association has to pay for.
The people on the board are not paid, they are volunteers. Read your CC&R's.
Nobody will care if you are 24 and 26 or 67 and 70. You bought your condo/house in a place where there are dues for expenses. If you couldn't pay this, you should not have bought in a place where there are association dues.
If you want changes in your neighborhood, GET INVOLVED!!!
Do not expect someone else to do the things that need to be done. Find out how you can help, go to the meetings and talk to the board members, but do something, don't just complain!!
And by the way, the association dues HAVE TO BE PAID ON TIME!!!

My fiancee and I with two children moved in our 1983 year old home on April 17th, 2003. We received a letter in the mail telling us to fix our garage door.
There is nothing wrong with it. There is a chip on the design and that is all. It was like that when we purchased the home. Number 1. We do not have the money to fix every little thing they can pin point.
We also received a letter saying our association dues are due in the amount of $297.30. plus $17.79 of that fee is accumulated for the printing of the invoice. That is outrageous. Why should we have to pay $17.79 for processing the invoice?
If that is the case I would like to do away with that and have them email me the amount due or call me on the phone and deduct $17.79 from the amount.
Also they threatened to forclose on the home or place a lien on it if we did not pay. We do not have this amount of lump sum money to pay out.
We need more street lights too. We reside in Houston, Texas. The association should NOT have that power at all. Especially when we pay our mortgage on time every single month. Never been late. Not to mention we are only 24 and 26 years of age.
We do not have a lot of money. The main issue is we pay our mortgage to keep our home and these people think and come in and just want to rip our home from out under us. I feel the money is taken to pay their salaries.
I don't see any improvement in our neighborhood. We do not get trash cans, recycle bins, or new mailboxes. The mailboxes are so old in the neighborhood. They could use the money for those three items. Someone needs to get involved and stop the association people.
